Scripture of the day: "Jesus then said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.' Then they said to Him, 'Lord, always give us this bread.' Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.'" John 6:32-35
Thought of the day: The people asked Jesus, "What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You?" John 6:30. The verses above are the beginning of His answer. He had fed the five thousand during the previous day. They were there. How quickly they seem to have forgotten. Was forgetfulness caused by the return of their hunger? Many people who condition obedience on signs don't really want to obey. They seek God's service to them ... rather than their service to Him.
Challenge of the day: Jesus performed miracles as signs and out of compassion for hurting people ... authenticating Him and His message. However, performing such miracles was not His primary purpose. Jesus came down out of Heaven as the bread of life. God came to us. What more should we ask of Him as proof? He is under no obligation to us. We have no right to ask Him to jump through our hoops. He is not our porter ... He is our potter. And we are the clay.
